You can also park in the large car park at Glenridding by the Ullswater lake. Parking is cash only, very steep start but very rewarding. So walking poles a must to take the pressure off the knees. Helvellyn is often ascended from the more rugged eastern side of Patterdale and Glenridding which sports the famous ridges of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, the more sedate western approaches still offers good walking. Helvellyn I would love to come back and give it a go on a clearer day but thats unlikely. This is my favourite mountain to climb and I chose the Thirlmere side to ascend the mountain. The visibility was non existent unfortunately but it didnt detract from the sense of achievement. From Glenridding it takes approximately 3-4 hours for a person of average fitness to make it to the summit. But dont just take our word for it Helvellyn round from Thirlmere. A gentle warm up through the woods above Thirlmere Reservoir before climbing into the mountains means we avoid much of the bustle and scrambling on Striding and Swirrel Edges. Take the left fork, which runs just below a section of rocks and a cairn. Grisedale Tarn soon comes into view and the steep pathway zig-zags down towards the edge of the tarn. The path gradually becomes increasingly steep and there are a few small sections of scree.
